Goodbyes are hard. But for former Carolina Panthers star Brian Burns, it felt like a foregone conclusion.
Carolina traded Burns to the New York Giants for some draft capital. It was an unceremonious end to a five-year career in Charlotte defined by personal success and team shortcomings. Following the trade, he had heartfelt words for what went wrong in Charlotte and the future of his career.
"It's just how the trade went down," Burns said. "With Carolina, respect to Carolina. I appreciate them drafting me in 2019. I had a great five years there. It just came to an end, and we split paths."
Burns' five years in Charlotte were filled with Pro Bowl appearances, but it ended rather sadly. He had a poor 2023 season, as contract negotiations stalled and he dealt with his share of injuries.
The Panthers ultimately franchise-tagged Burns, but it was known that he was headed somewhere else.
That place is now New York. Meanwhile, Burns remains thankful for his time playing for Carolina.
"Love ya, Queen City," Burns wrote in a reply to the Panthers' goodbye post on X.
When it is all said and done, Burns' career in Carolina will be shrouded with what could have been.
Panthers roster is already miles better than it was a year ago after latest move
The Carolina Panthers landed one pass-rush target, but reports indicate another signing at the position could still be on the way.
