In a season devoid of much celebration, Brian Burns still reigns supreme.

The Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl-caliber outside linebacker has earned his nomination as the midseason team MVP not merely for his on-field play but also his leadership.

Despite not having the contract extension he has long sought. And despite the trade rumors that ran rampant for weeks leading up to the deadline, Burns has remained steadfast in his contributions to the defense.

Through eight games, Burns has five sacks, 10 quarterback hits, a forced fumble and 25 tackles.

He has been a stabilizing voice in the locker room and played his part on the defense well.

There is a reason Panthers head coach Frank Reich said he was "really happy" when Burns was still on the team following the trade deadline. The defense wouldn't be as solid without him.

Most Valuable Player insinuates that the player brings more than just on-field production. Burns does that. The Panthers' defense has often, in games, been let down by the lack of offensive production. Burns has ensured his unit doesn't waiver in intensity and work ethic regardless of the outcome.

Now, the offseason will tell if the Panthers value him nearly as much.
