Frank Reich, the often confusing Carolina Panthers head coach, has elected to reclaim play-calling duties as the team's offense has floundered and its season ran off the rails.
Before the bye week, Reich gave up play-calling duties, handing them to Thomas Brown during what was supposed to be a soft portion of the schedule. It was a move of desperation, as Reich attempts to hold onto his job with pressure only mounting from ownership to see results.
For the flip-flop move, however, rookie quarterback Bryce Young — at least to the public — continues to stand by his coach's confused decisions.
“It doesn’t hinder me, it doesn’t affect my ability,” Young said. "It’s the same system. It’s still that.”
During Brown's tenure, the offense still stunk.
The Panthers managed two offensive touchdowns in three games under Brown while averaging 237.3 yards and 16.3 first downs a game. Awful. The numbers from Reich’s initial, six-game stretch: Ten offensive touchdowns, 294.7 yards, and 20.7 first downs a game. Not great.
But the decision to take over the offense, again, is a move that Young feels like he can work with.
He claims it is the same system. If that is the case, desperation or not, it will most likely be the same result.
