Brian Burns and the Carolina Panthers may work everything out after all.
The Panthers' two-time Pro Bowler is seeking a contract extension, and after suiting up for practice Wednesday, followed by San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa garnering a record-setting contract, the Panthers and Burns could finally be looking at getting a deal done.
Burns is no Bosa. But he is the best defensive player on the Panthers. And he could easily find himself enjoying a 15-sack season in the new and — hopefully — improved Ejiro Evero defense. So, with the market set, the Panthers will most likely have to pay Burns the premium to keep him on the roster.
Thus, it is most likely a sigh of relief from the organization that signs are pointing to Burns having a new deal sometime in the not-too-distant future.
Burns is eyeing a contract closer to $30 million per year. The Panthers see him as a player in the range of $24 to $27 million annually. Though the two sides still appear far apart, when reading the tea leaves, everything, from Bosa signing his record-breaking five-year, $170 million deal, to Burns suiting up for practice on Wednesday — a day that could have provided clarity regarding if he would really hold out — indicates that a deal could be coming sooner rather than later.
“I think he’ll definitely get taken care of. Those guys upstairs are known for doing the right thing and known for making sure the core guys are taken care of. And it don’t get more core than Brian Burns,” Donte Jackson told Joseph Person of The Athletic. “So my prediction is it’ll definitely get handled. That’s what I’m praying for.”
