As the Carolina Panthers prepare to take on a more than formidable foe in the Miami Dolphins, the word of the week has been "simplify."
Frank Reich explained that a simplified offense would help rookie quarterback Bryce Young find his footing after the team slid to an 0-5 start. On Thursday, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown agreed — while also adding that Young will continue to use a play-calling wristband against the Dolphins.
“It was a collective decision when it comes to us communicating with him, but also us talking from a staff standpoint about finding ways to limit some of that verbiage you talked about from a pre-snap standpoint,” Brown said “It’s a lot easier to be able to communicate a wristband number versus an entire play call."
The wristband for Young popped up initially in Week 4. Brown said its addition has made life a little easier on Young, who threw for three touchdowns against the Detroit Lions in Week 5.
“I think it’s definitely been an improvement when it comes to the efficiency, when it comes to being in and out of the huddle, but also sideline communication as well,” Brown said.
Communication will be at a premium against the Dolphins. The Panthers offense will attempt to keep up with Mike McDaniel's scheme that has set NFL records through the first month of the season.
To do so, Brown also said that coaches are working together to gameplan more opportunities for gadget player Laviska Shenault Jr.
Against Miami, the Panthers plan to use him at multiple spots on the field, Brown believes Shenault's versatility could make it difficult to construct a gameplan to stop Carolina.
"He’s kind of a positionless player," Brown said. "We play him at all three spots receiver-wise plus tailback as well. So, very versatile guy for us.”
But getting Shenault more involved all over the field first starts with Young succeeding in a simplified offensive system.
