Matt Corral hit waivers after the Carolina Panthers parted ways with the second-year quarterback Wednesday.

The move means that the Panthers will only carry two quarterbacks on the official 53-man roster for now. But that didn't change head coach Frank Reich's mind in wanting Corral around after what he's seen throughout the preseason.

“We’re happy with the progress Matt made,” he told reporters following a Wednesday afternoon’s practice. “As we’ve talked about, the whole offseason—there’s a lot of complexities, a lot of moving parts puttin’ together a roster.

"Everybody understands that the sole motivation is to do what’s best for the team. We’re tryin’ to get as many players on the roster, in that locker room, on the 53, and on the practice squad as we can that can help us win this year. Those are tough decisions."

He added: “I don’t mind saying I would love to get Matt back. We think he’s done very well. Would like to see him continue to progress.”

On Thursday morning, Scott Fitterer, the Panthers general manager, said that if he clears waivers, Corral will definitely be back on the practice team.

Corral was one of the last vestiges of the Matt Rhule era in Panthers history. It is a time the organization would rather forget. But that doesn't mean the young signal caller isn't someone who the Panthers wouldn't want around.

Corral completed 28 of his 47 passing attempts for 249 yards and an interception in the preseason. And if he clears waivers, the Panthers are eligible to sign him to the practice squad.
