Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young could use all the encouragement he can get.
After back-to-back poor performances and an 0-2 start to the NFL season, Young's rookie campaign isn't shaping up to look and feel like many expected when he was selected No. 1 overall out of Alabama.
During the Week 2 20-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints at home, Panthers fans booed Young and the offense. And some would say they had every right to do so. Young finished the game with a pedestrian 153 passing yards on 22 completions and one touchdown. As the boos rained down, Saints quarterback Derek Carr could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head.
It was reported during the game that he turned to his teammates and said the fans didn't recognize how hard it is to be a quarterback at the highest level.
After the game, Carr doubled down on a belief in Young as a star quarterback, and he went as far as to say that the Panthers rookie quarterback is one of his kids' favorite players to watch.
"I'm here for you," Carr said. "I am rooting for you. He's going to be a great player. My kids loved watching him. And I'm okay with that because Bryce is a good guy."
Those are needed words of encouragement for Bryce, whose game has lacked the same flair it had at Alabama.
After the game, Young said that the offensive struggles fell on his shoulders. He explained that he has to be better and more willing to push the ball downfield, get through his progression, and move the ball consistently.
He's right. He does have to be more aggressive. However, Frank Reich and his coaching staff must do the same. The Panthers tried to dink and dunk their way to a win. That may have worked a generation ago, but the game is different now. With Young's arm talent, it is only a matter of time until Reich loosens the reigns and allows his quarterback to play the game he knows well.
It appears Carr is confident that time is coming for Young as well.
