In need of improvement, the Carolina Panthers are focusing on the basics for second-year quarterback Bryce Young.
With improvement for second-year quarterback Bryce Young the topic of the offseason, the Carolina Panthers coaching staff is choosing to get back to the basics for the team's franchise quarterback.
The Panthers hired Dave Canales to be a quarterback whisperer. Now the 22-year-old focuses on footwork and the nuts and bolts of being a good quarterback.
“We are focusing on getting his feet right and organizing the concepts that he gets to throw so that he’s getting the ball out quickly,” passing game coordinator Nathan Carroll said to Kassidy Hill via the team's official website. “Trying to be consistent with his footwork so that everything flows through from the ground up.”
Young's mechanics often broke down during the 2023 season. Part of the reason behind that was the poor play of the offensive line.
So, Carolina did what any team would do during free agency – adding two offensive guards Damien Lewis and Robert Hunt.
With adequate protection, Young will have time to play into his strengths: the play-action passing game and reading NFL defenses secondary.
“We’re going to fit this offense to Bryce,” Carroll said. "As we get closer through training camp and then finally in the season, we’ll get to our real offense and what we’re going to be with Bryce, and he’ll have input at times on certain things that he likes. And we’ll try to make the best out of what we have here and try to be as hard to stop on offense as possible.”
Through the 2023 season, Young averaged 179.8 passing yards per game. He threw 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was also sacked a whopping 62 times. That must change if Carolina aims to win more than two games in Young's second season.
