When the Carolina Panthers sent Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers, it was the end of an era.
McCaffrey, now with an opportunity to win a Super Bowl, has played with a handful of quarterbacks. Two of the most prominent are Brock Purdy and Cam Newton.
Recently, McCaffrey was asked about what the similarities between Purdy and Newton are. And what stuck out to McCaffrey was simple: winning.
“I think both of them have that underdog mentality at all times and both of them carry a big chip on their shoulder," McCaffrey said. "Both great leaders and winners.”
Purdy and Newton have a bit of a history. The former Panthers quarterback turned YouTuber is on the record calling Purdy nothing more than a game manager.
Newton doubled down on the comments when he claimed that Purdy was the 49ers' 10th-best player.
"If you really just want to be honest, if you add in the defensive talent and you add in the offensive talent, Brock Purdy is the 10th-best player on this team," Newton said. "OK, cool. Did he have a great game? Yes. Has he been playing out of his mind? Yes. Is he a quarterback that's hot? Yes. But he's still the 10th-best player on this team."
Purdy has taken Newton's comments in stride, claiming that being called a game manager can be a compliment.
"I feel like it can be a compliment at times where it's like alright, you've got a guy that can come in and run the system well," Purdy said. "I feel like that's a compliment. There's 32 teams in the NFL and there's not a lot of people that can come in and play the quarterback position well in the NFL."
Though Purdy hasn't taken it personally, Newton hasn't relented.
Either way, McCaffrey is siding with complimenting them both by calling each quarterback a winner in their own right.
