Getting the most out of Bryce Young is Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales' main job.
To do so, the Panthers front office helped him out a little bit. Carolina added guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis to beef up the pass protection for Young.
Carolina also traded for a 1,000-yard pass catcher in Diontae Johnson, who Canales compared to two All-Pro level receivers. Still, the 42-year-old head coach also has a foolproof plan to make sure football life with Young works well – build an unbreakable bond.
“We just try to connect on a personal level,” Canales said. “I think the more that we can create a relationship, it really softens the message. Versus when it’s just like player-coach, it’s kind of clunky and it’s a little bit abrasive when you’re constantly just correcting these football things but you don’t have the basis of a relationship to lean on.”
Famously, during Young's rookie season, he had several voices in his ear. Each person wanted something from him. Ultimately, that experiment ended in Frank Reich being fired and the Panthers clearing house.
Canales, who rebuilt the careers of Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield, wants to simplify things.
A good relationship with Young means the two can talk about parts of the offense that inevitably will break down during the 2024 season.
Additionally, Young will be able to approach Canales regarding what he sees on the field – something he didn't appear too eager to do under Reich.
Getting the most out of Young is Canales' job. He already is doing more than his predecessor ever did in that department.
