Dave Canales had one job when he was hired – worry about the offense and don't mess up the defense.
And it is clear, he is trying not to.
On Monday, ESPN reported that Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and most of the defense staff will return for the 2024 season.
The team has yet to formally announce Evero's return, but during Canales' first meeting with the Charlotte-area press, he said the defensive coach would be a "huge" part of the team's process moving forward.
Now he is making good on his word.
Evero was a sought-after commodity in the NFL. He has directed a top-10 defense. Evero interviewed for three head-coaching vacancies — with the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons and Panthers. He also had several teams calling about their defensive coordinator openings, which the Panthers routinely denied.
With the architect of a top-10 defense staying in-house, Carolina can centralize its focus on rebuilding the offense around Bryce Young – Canales' main job. That will be harder to come by. But with the careers of Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield as living proof, the Panthers may have at least made one right decision so far.
Panthers don’t want to change everything
Evero is in his second season as an NFL defensive coordinator
