ESPN named the Carolina Panthers as the best free agent fit for a wide receiver that would instantly be a fan favorite in the Queen City.

Matt Bowen named San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings, a former Tennessee Vols standout, as an ideal fit for the Panthers.

Jennings is slated to hit free agency in March after spending the first six seasons of his NFL career with the 49ers after getting selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

“The 49ers’ top WR in 2025 can use his 6-foot-3, 212-pound frame and route-running skills to make himself available to quarterback Bryce Young, especially in critical down-and-distance situations,” wrote Bowen. “Plus, with Jennings joining Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker, the Panthers would have a versatile receiving group that can work every level of the field.”

It’s possible that San Francisco could place the franchise tag on Jennings, but The Athletic’s Vic Tafur noted this week that’s unlikely the 49ers will go that route.

“Jennings is one of only two options the 49ers have for placing the franchise tag on a player before the March 3 deadline, but the $28 million price tag seems too high,” wrote Tafur. “Jennings earned $13.1 million last season when you add in his bonuses and incentives, and likely thinks he is worth $20 million, so the 49ers might let him test the market to see what his price really is.”

Jauan Jennings would be a beloved player for the Panthers

Jennings doesn’t look like most superstar wide receivers. He doesn’t have elite speed, and he’s never put up huge numbers (1,618 yards and 15 touchdowns over the last two seasons). But he’s a player that every team should want on their roster. Jennings is a relentless blocker, he plays every snap with 100 percent effort, and he’s always willing to go to war for his teammates.

The former Vol is also known for coming up with clutch catches on third down (his “third-and-Jauan” nickname was earned)

Jennings is the type of player that you hate to play against, but you love having on your side.

The Panthers could use a player with an edge as they look to take the next step in 2026, and Jennings would certainly provide that edge.
