With Bryce Young officially getting the nod to start again in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, much has been made about what his progress as a player might look like in the long term.
Throughout the week, the Carolina Panthers coaching staff noted that Young has shown more energy. He appears to have an extra pep in his step. And on Wednesday, he reportedly had the best practice of his career.
The Panthers talked up Young's cool and calm demeanor. However, the team appears to have also enjoyed this new version of Young, who is not only leading by example but leading through voice as well.
That zeal has carried over throughout the week for Young. And headed into Sunday's matchup, the No. 1 overall pick is feeling more open just being who is he — and Panthers head coach Frank Reich agrees.
“Bryce is like every other guy, right?” he said. “Hey, let’s get better every week. I think some of that is he’s excited to be back in there after missin’ a week. But, yeah, after us trying to clean things up operationally, everybody’s gotta take responsibility in that. Coaches, players, quarterback. So I think Bryce is just, again, doin’ his job—let me take a step up, let me continue to clean up this operation so it’s cleaner. That’s what we saw this week.”
Reich added: “Everybody’s gotta be uniquely his own personality. I’m not aware of that, but if that’s what being said, I think after you come off a performance, and really off of three performances where the operation, in general, can be improved, I think it’s normal to talk like that.
“This is what I would say to every coach and every player, what I say to myself—I gotta be who I am. I’m comfortable in my own skin, Bryce is comfortable in his own skin. I’m gonna be who I am, he’s gonna be who he is. But are we all committed to grow? Yeah, we’re all committed to grow. Well, what does that look like? Well, it looks different for every person, every player.”
Young may be wired differently from most, but it isn't something Reich necessarily worries about. And at times, it is what has made him great at other levels. Time will tell if it does the same for Young at the NFL level.
Panthers QB Bryce Young returns to practice Wednesday
For an injury initially believed to be one that would hold Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young out multiple weeks, it looks like that isn’t the case.
