Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich rejects the notion that the team is in a rebuild.

After losing in Week 5 to the Detroit Lions 42-24, Reich explained again that his team is close to being a better version of itself. Winning in the NFL is difficult. The Panthers are attempting to strike some balance between winning now and building for later.

Reich, however, doesn't view where the Panthers are as rebuilding. He claims it building the right foundation to build something sustainable moving forward.

"We wanna build a winner now, and we want something that can be sustained," Reich said. "We wanna build it on the right foundation. We’re tryin’ to build it on good principles, build through the draft, re-sign your own players when you can — it doesn’t always make sense — but when you can. So, I think, obviously, he has a great perspective on that.”

Reich added: “Well, I’m not calling it a rebuild. I’m not calling it a rebuild. Let me say it this way: I think everything is always building. We probably all would agree with that. We’re always building. We’re always building.

“So, I’m really comfortable with that. I think players understand that. We understand that as coaches. So, you just wanna see some fruitier labor a little bit earlier than we’re seein’ it right now. I’m confident we’re doing it the right way with the right people. We just need a little bit more evidence, a little bit more fruit right now to get things going.”

The Panthers can't be in a true rebuild because they don't own their own draft capital. They gave that up to draft Bryce Young. But as long as the team continues losing, it will most likely find itself in a rebuild, whether Reich wants to admit it or not.
