Despite the lackluster preseason results, the Carolina Panthers general manager isn't feeling too down about his ballclub.
On Thursday, in front of reporters, Scott Fitterer explained that he believes the division crown isn't just a dream, instead, it is right in the grasp of a young team with an enigmatic rookie quarterback looking to make his mark on the franchise.
“We had mostly positive, a couple equals; there was one negative,” Fitterer said. “But overall, I just thought like, ‘You know what? We’re making progress.’ It’s where we want to be.
"Every year, I say our goal is to win the NFC South. And I think, even with all the new faces, the new staff, and all the changes that are taking place, that’s our goal. And I think if we play (to) our ability, that’s definitely within reach.”
Driving Fitterer's confidence in his roster is Young, who took some time to get going in the preseason but has trended upward every week of the summer.
Also adding to the mix of intriguing expectations for the Panthers is a contract extension that still awaits outside linebacker Brian Burns.
Burns held out of practice. And neither Frank Reich nor Fitterer explained why. Instead, it was labeled as a "personal matter," and Burns didn't speak after practice.
The Panthers are walking into a season of expectation and Fitterer went out on a limb and admitted so. Still, there are several issues the team will need to work through sooner rather than later if it wants to lift the NFC South crown at the end of the regular season.
