Biggest advocate for Panthers stadium renovations came from team's former leading rusher
Jonathan Stewart spoke to the Charlotte city council about the importance of approving the renovations to Bank of America Stadium.
Outside the Carolina Panthers organization, former star running back Jonathan Stewart was the biggest supporter of the franchise's $800 million renovation plan.
Speaking at the Charlotte city council meeting that culminated in a 7-3 vote in favor of the renovation plan that requires $650 million in taxpayer dollars to fund some of the renovations Monday night, Stewart claimed passing would elevate the team to heights higher than the Super Bowl appearance in 2015.
“The stadium renovations don’t just enhance fan and player experiences, they embody what the sport of football does for Charlotte,” said Stewart, who played 10 seasons for the franchise. “I know firsthand that Panthers unite people from all walks of life, bringing them together in the spirit of sport. The fans deserve this and the community also deserves this.
“Queen City isn’t just a title, it represents grace, strength, and vision. As stewards of this city, we must uphold these qualities: leading with integrity, pursuing excellence, and seizing opportunities to elevate our city. This is an investment in our city’s future, economy, and residents—as signifies our dedication to growth, progress, and a relentless pursuit that defines the Queen City. Let’s embrace this as an opportunity to build a future where the Queen City shines brighter, even more so than it did in 2015.”
The city council committed to a 20-year agreement that features renovations like a new sound system, scoreboards, LED boards, updated bathrooms, faster escalators, and new seats throughout the stadium. A gathering space outside the stadium will also be constructed along with a sky patio to see the Charlotte skyline.
Construction will begin in 2026. The renovations are expected to be completed by 2029.
Following the passage of the renovation plan, team owner David Tepper released a statement in support of the decision.
"Today's vote by the Charlotte City Council is the culmination of many thoughtful discussions with city officials, local leaders, and our fans to create a shared vision for Bank of America Stadium," said Tepper, Tepper Sports & Entertainment owner.
"Nicole and I are grateful for the collaboration and support of the project, as well as our ongoing partnership between Tepper Sports & Entertainment and the city."For nearly 30 years, Charlotte has been the home of the Carolina Panthers and, more recently, Charlotte FC. We are proud to be in the Carolinas and look forward to delivering a venue that meets the needs of our community, players, and fans for years to come."
Though the city council got behind the Panthers, it was Stewart who made the most compelling argument of the evening.
