The NFL came to a quick decision regarding the punishment that will be laid down following the postgame fight between Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

While the fight took place after the game when the two teams met at midfield, tempers were flaring between the two all game long and the punishment actually has to do with an action that happened well before the scuffle after the game.

Tre’von Moehrig will be suspended for one game for low blow hit on Jauan Jennings

The NFL will be suspending Moehrig for one game without pay for the low blow hit he had on Jennings earlier in the game in the fourth quarter. Moehrig has the option appeal the suspension and it sounds like he will, but one could imagine it’d be a tough case to win when you watch the video.

After the game, Moehrig fielded questions from reporters and noted Jennings was “talking crazy” and things were manifesting well before he hit Jennings in the final quarter of the game. Warranted or not, it’s something that can’t be tolerated in the game.

“The guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan explained. “I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there.”

Saying the suspension holds, Moehrig would be forced to miss Sunday’s game against Matthew Stafford and the red hot Los Angeles Rams, the team currently in possession of the top seed in the conference. It’s another big time game the Panthers need to pull out to keep the playoff hopes alive.

Now, it’s looking like they’ll have to do it without one of their top defenders. In 12 games with the Panthers, Moehrig has totaled the second-most tackles on the team with 81 while adding a team-high 10 tackles for a loss and one interception. He’s been a bright spot and huge addition for this unit and it’ll be a tough matchup to be without him.

Based on other suspensions this season and the fact that he will be suspended without pay, it’s likely this is the maximum punishment for Moehrig. Once fines are released to the public on Saturday, we’ll see if the league lays the hammer down on Jennings too with a fine for his actions after the game.
