When the Carolina Panthers lost 27-0 to the New York Jets, it was a moment of learning for the Panthers.
And in the learning spirit, 32-year-old receiver Adam Thielen visited Jets quarterback Zach Wilson and offered him some advice. He should have given that same advice to his own quarterback — Bryce Young.
“Go have some fun this year,” Thielen said during the second episode of “Hard Knocks,” which first aired on HBO Max on Tuesday night. “Stay in it, man. Don’t let other people say who you are. Just go and fricken prove it. You’re a hell of a player. Just believe it.
“I know it’s tough, man. This league’s tough, man. This league’s tough. But you just gotta fricken go prove it every day. Every day in practice. Every day fricken, when you get a chance, just go prove it. You don’t have to talk about it.”
It is good advice, but it is a message Thielen should have saved for Young.
The Panthers had just slogged through an ugly preseason game where the offensive line looked awful and Young completed less than five passes.
After the game, Young owned the ways he could have been better, but he also embraced the challenge that will come from the season that is ahead.
Still, Thielen, a two-time Pro Bowler is wasting good advice on a quarterback who is a bust. The Jets brought in Aaron Rodgers for a reason. The Panthers turned drafted Young and handed him the keys to the offense for a reason as well.
Young's veteran receiver should have spared his knowledge for a quarterback that appears to actually have a future in the NFL, not one that is on his way out.
