It is hard not to expect the world of Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young.
He was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the Panthers traded their top receiver to Chicago, assuring their chances at selecting the Alabama standout. The team then handed over the offensive keys during offseason team activities and minicamp to only double-down on Young starting after the first day of training camp. The weight of the world is on Young's shoulders. And so far, he's lived up to it, earning an intriguing comparison from Vonn Bell, the Panthers safety who played for the Cincinnati Bengals when Joe Burrow, another No. 1 overall selection, was getting his NFL legs under him.
Bell believes the two — Young and Burrow — are extremely similar.
“Man, it’s pretty much the same,” Bell said to Sara Walsh after Monday's practice. “They just wanna prove themselves at first, and let their play do the talking. Then, they go ease into the leadership role and whatnot. So they just tryin’ to get their feet down. Just really go out there and show the guys who they are and just showin’ up every day to work just tryin’ to be a pro. But they’re very similar and they’re phenomenal talents, for sure.”
Carolina Panthers are in good hands
Bell added that Young has looked good when Bell's faced him every day of training camp on defense.
"He's a natural playmaker," Bell said. "Moving out the pocket, throwing on the run, he's just so comfortable back there."
Bell also showcased confidence that the Panthers will win the division, a task that wouldn't be impossible as the NFC South remains wide open.
But already, Young is drawing comparisons to one of the game's great passers. And if the No. 1 overall selection has anything positive in common with Burrow, that is a sign that good things should be on the way.
