Life is coming at Bryce Young fast.
On Sunday, the Carolina Panthers confirmed that the rookie quarterback is expected to start in the team's first preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday.
"I do have an idea,'' Reich said. "There is flexibility in the plan. There has to be. That's just being smart about it. We have a general idea how many plays we want to get through the whole preseason, but that can be adjusted by 10 or 20 percent depending on how things go.''
The plan to play Young shouldn't come as a surprise. General manager Scott Fitterer said on the day players reported to camp that Young needs reps.
"We're not going to put him out there before he's ready,'' Fitterer said at the time. "But he needs those reps.''
Young was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Throughout the summer, Young has earned the praise of several within the organization. They have raved about his leadership. Veterans on the team have gushed praise about his ability to stay calm under pressure and never appear rattled.
With Young billed as the future of the franchise, having the opportunity to prove himself in the preseason is the next step for a quarterback who has already shown how great he can be.
