Frank Reich made a difficult decision Monday afternoon.
The Carolina Panthers head coach relinquished play-calling duties, handing them over to the offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, in a move he described as always "part of the plan."
Naturally, the change in playcalling will affect rookie quarterback Bryce Young the most. And for the move, Young said he couldn't wait.
“I’m super excited,” Young said. “I’m excited for the future."
The future has to be better than the present. Young hasn't gotten off to as strong a start as his peers. He has yet to earn his first career win. But in recent weeks he started trending in the right direction.
Against the Miami Dolphins, Young played an efficient first quarter and led two touchdown drives. It was the best he's looked to start a game all season.
Still, it wasn't enough for the Panthers' offense to sustain efficiency throughout the game. The end result was Reich firing himself as a play caller, something he's done since he's been in the NFL.
It was probably time.
The Panthers are 23rd in the league in total offense, passing offense, and scoring offense (18.7 points per game). They are 22nd in rushing offense.
Reich relinquished duties to someone capable. Brown is an intuitive. He is also someone Young said plays a large role in his day-to-day life as a quarterback.
“He’s always the person we go to, who we consult," Young said of Brown. "He helps build everything and has always been a huge part of the process. He’s always worked a lot with us and then he’s floating throughout all the rooms. He’s someone who’s really great to work with.”
With Young excited, and fewer tasks on Reich's plate, the Panthers are hoping out of the bye week they can find the rhythm that has eluded them since the start of the season.
“Listen, we’re 0-6. I understand that. So as a play caller, there’s not much pride I can take in being 0-6,” Reich said. “But I do feel like the offense is starting to find a rhythm. So looking forward to that continuing to grow.”
Chuba Hubbard’s stock rises after Week 6 showing against the Miami Dolphins
The Carolina Panthers had something they often hadn’t in the NFL regular season.
Frank Reich hands over play-calling duties to Thomas Brown after dropping to 0-6
It took losing to the Miami Dolphins after leading by 14 points for Frank Reich, the Carolina Panthers head coach, to see the writing on the wall.
