Greatness recognizes greatness.
Well, at least that is how it is supposed to work. And for rookie quarterback Bryce Young, that appears to be happening.
NBA superstar, future Hall of Famer, and the best 3-point shooter of all time, Steph Curry, a known Carolina Panthers fan, recently gave Young the superstar seal of approval.
With rookies reporting to training camp in Spartanburg on Saturday, the excitement around Young appears to be burgeoning to the surface. Thus, Curry weighed in on what Young can be for the Panthers franchise when he spoke to CBS sports writer Cody Benjamin.
“Extremely excited,” Curry said of Young, via Benjamin. “I’m excited that we have hopefully the quarterback of the future that can lead the franchise to the heights that we (enjoyed) with Cam (Newton) and potentially get that first Super Bowl. I’m excited to watch him play. I’m rooting for him. I’m excited for the city of Charlotte to have some new excitement and some new energy around the team. I’ll be tuned in for Opening Week, for sure.”
High praise from one of the greatest in his sport. And, strange enough, though they play completely different sports, Young has drawn the Curry comparisons. Mainly, what draws the comparison is Young's point-guard-like ability to orchestrate an offense to his exact will.
Young can make plays out of impasses, similar to Curry's ability to find a sliver of daylight and let off one of his trademarks quick-release 3-point shots. And the comparison goes further because, like Curry, Young is a small quarterback.
Unlike Newton, who was physically imposing, Young will have to win with skill and finesse, something he did well at Alabama. Curry is the NBA equivalent. He doesn't have blinding speed or uber athleticism, but he has a knack for shooting that has earned him near GOAT status among his peers.
If, without playing a down at the NFL level, Young is already earning their respect, imagine what might happen once he starts producing week in and out.
