Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was one of three top rookie quarterbacks to start Sunday.

And he played, arguably, the worst game out of the three.

Young was 20-of-38 for 146 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. The Panthers lost 24-10 to the Atlanta Falcons. And making the game a little more uninspiring was that the Panthers, at one point, led 10-7.

For context, Anthony Richardson, the starter for the Indianapolis Colts and No. 4 overall pick, threw for 223 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Houston Texans' starter, CJ Stroud, threw for 242 yards and completed 63% of his passes.

What torpedoed Young's day was the turnover bug. He threw two interceptions that led to 10 points for the Falcons.

“That’s unacceptable,’' Young said. “That’s on me. I just have to clean that up. Not good enough. Not good enough to win, obviously. I made crucial turnovers, which you can’t do, especially where they happened. That falls on me. That falls on my shoulders.”

Both interceptions were to safety Jessie Bates, a free-agent acquisition for the Falcons during the offseason.

And on the interceptions, Young implied that Bates being in those positions took him by surprise.

“Jessie did a great job on both. He’s a veteran guy, plays great in space,” Young said. “You can’t just make assumptions. It’s just doing a better job of seeing, making sure I’m checking and not just going off what it should be on an X and O.”

Young will have to be better for the Panthers going forward. There is no other option. Panthers head coach Frank Reich indicated he isn't too worried about the offense, sighting drives that moved the ball down the field until turnovers got the best of the team.

Plus, Reich isn't too worried about his young quarterback either.

“There’s not another guy in the world I’d want to work with. He’s got everything you want as a player, as a leader, as a person,” Reich said. “I thought he did a lot of good things today.”
