The Carolina Panthers may be saying goodbye to a wide receiver and key punt returner.

The Panthers are not expected to tender Ihmir Smith-Marsette a contract as a restricted free agent, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.

If Smith-Marsette walks, it ends a rather short-lived experiment the Panthers played at the start of the 2023 NFL season.

The Panthers traded for Smith-Marsette near the start of the season. He was previously with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He averaged 8.7 yards per punt return and had a 79-yard touchdown return in a Week 10 loss to the Bears.

In total, Smith-Marsette returned 37 punts for 322 yards during the 2023 season.

Smith-Marsette, who entered the league as a 2021 Vikings fifth-round pick, also caught eight passes for 51 yards and ran eight times for 74 yards last season.

His departure from the team indicates Dan Morgan's concerted attempt to reshape this roster and mold it in his image.
