Dan Morgan and Bandit Tills made the move of the 2024 offseason for the Carolina Panthers Friday.

The Panthers front office agreed to a four-year, $96 million extension for star defensive tackle Derrick Brown – avoiding a Brian Burns-like situation as Brown headed into the last year of his rookie contract.

Brown's deal looks like one that made both sides happy with roughly $63 million in guaranteed money, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported

The $24 million per year average on Brown's extension is the fourth highest in the NFL for a defensive tackle. It trails the Kansas City Chiefs' Chris Jones, Las Vegas Raiders' Christian Wilkins and Baltimore Ravens' Justin Madubuike. All signed new contracts as free agents during the offseason.

Brown was the sole bright spot in what was a dismal 2023 season for the Panthers.

He claimed 103 tackles during the year, the most for a defensive lineman in NFL history. Morgan, the Panthers' new general manager walked into the job eager to work out a deal with Brown to keep him in Charlotte long-term.

And just weeks before the 2024 NFL Draft, that deal is now done. The star defensive tackle is locked up through the 2028 season.

Brown's raw tackle stats don't tell the full story of his on-field impact.

Pro Football Focus handed Brown the fourth-best defensive grade among all interior defenders in the NFL in 2023. On that list, Brown joined players like Aaron Donald, Quinnen Williams and Dexter Lawrence.

For his play, Brown was given his first Pro Bowl nod at the end of the 2023 season.

He now has a hefty pay raise to boot. Consider it the first great move of Morgan's career as the Panthers' general manager. If more moves like this continue to come, Carolina won't be the punching bag of the NFL for much longer.
