First attempt for the Panthers to replace Brian Burns’ production is waiting for them on the free agent market

The term generational pass rusher is thrown around far too often and that isn’t what Brian Burns was for the Carolina Panthers.
He was a very good pass rusher that is going to be tough to replace. The Panthers turned down a chance to get more for him in the past and that is going to sting a bit.
All they can do now is hope the draft picks they received can hit and that they can find a way to get after the pass rusher in the short term. Past Burns, things are bleak for their pass-rushing room and it must be addressed.
Let’s face it, the Panthers aren’t going to be good next year and they’re a team that is going to overpay for free agents. One player they should take a shot on now is Chase Young, who is sitting out there as a free agent ready to be signed. Chase can’t be expected to replace Burns but he can help the cause.
Young had 7.5 sacks last year for the second time in his career but has yet to live up to the No. 2 overall draft slot that he was picked in during the 2020 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. Effort has been an issue for Yiung and that showed up in the playoffs last season with the San Francisco 49ers, where he was traded to from Washington seven games into the season.
How much would it cost for the Panthers to sign Chase Young?
Young is likely to get a one-year deal, according to our cap experts here at A to Z Sports. We have Young down for a one-year deal worth $15.5 million and that number could go down a bit with Joe free agency has gone for edge rushers so far.
The Panthers shouldn’t have a problem paying this for a player that has the talent to be a Pro Bowl-caliber pass rusher but has yet to put that consistency together.
The front office is now raked with picking up the pieces left behind from Burns’ departure for this free agency cycle at least, that could mean bringing in Young, whose best football should be ahead of him at just 24 years old.
Brian Burns trade is the first step toward fixing Bryce Young and the Panthers
After what has seemed like forever, the Carolina Panthers have traded Brian Burns. Burns is headed to New York to play for the Giants, where he'll join Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Thibodeaux on the defensive side of the ball, forming one of the scarier pass rushing threats in the NFL. In return, the Panthers received […]
