The Carolina Panthers have held Bryce Young's hand throughout the team's preseason matchups.
And ahead of the final preseason game against the Detroit Lions Friday, Panthers head coach Frank Reich is not certain he will play the quarterback.
"I'm not going to say anything 100% sure," said Reich when asked if Young and other starters will play next week. "Right now, the plan is for everybody to get ready to play. We'll see how we come out of this game injury-wise. We'll talk about it as a coaching staff and see what we need to accomplish.
"If I feel like we need to accomplish something, as a coaching staff if we feel like there's things we need to accomplish in one more preseason game, then we'll play the guys that need to be in there for that. If I feel like we're ready, then we won't play those guys."
It is understandable why Reich would think about resting the starters for the final preseason game.
With a long NFL season ahead of the Panthers, and expectations for Young building, resting the starters makes sense.
Still, it is concerning that Young heading into his first NFL game, if he doesn't play in the Panthers' final preseason game, will have only thrown 12 passes for 56 yards.
It may seem premature to call it the end of the Young playing in the preseason, but if it is, there will be even more anxiety and angst around Week 1 and how the Panthers' franchise quarterback plays.
