In the Carolina Panthers' 26-17 loss to the Detroit Lions, rookie quarterback Bryce Young showcased what makes him special — the ability to make plays with his legs.
Young racked up three rushes for 21 yards, with his longest run going for 13 yards. Through the air, Young also showcased his ability to command the offense, connecting on seven passes in 12 attempts for 73 yards and a touchdown. Young was multi-faceted and versatile, and his play impressed Panthers head coach Frank Reich, who sang his praises regarding Young's mobility.
"He has that instinct," Reich said after the game. "He has that ‘make you miss,’ like, even when a guy has him dead to rights. We’ve seen that in practice—little snippets of that. He has that little stop-start-stop hesitation move that’s hard to figure out. So, that was good by him.”
As for Young's overall game, Reich was thoroughly impressed in that regard as well.
“I think he was sharp and productive and made plays,” Reich said. "And showed even more playmaking ability with his feet. The throw for the touchdown. There was another throw to Adam [Thielen], kind of a big box throw that Adam lost the ball in the lights that I think had a decent chance to be completed. But Adam lost the ball in the lights. So, I thought he was accurate and made plays.”
Young is hitting his stride at the perfect time. The Panthers will play meaningful football on Sept. 10 against the Atlanta Falcons.
