If the confusion around the Carolina Panthers could not get worse, Frank Reich appears prepped to take back control of the offense.
Following what can only be described as an embarrassing loss to the Chicago Bears, Reich, who watched his offense struggle to do anything, said after the game it isn't out of the equation for him to take back play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.
"I understand how much responsibility and how the finger gets pointed. It’s usually several factors," Reich said. "I’m not saying it’s not important. It is important and it does factor. But I just don’t wanna jump to any quick conclusions. But as a head coach, obviously, I’m open to always doing what I think is best for us to win.”
Nearly a month ago, when Reich gave the play-calling duties to Brown, it was met with excitement. Several people thought that a new voice would help spark an offense that has sputtered with Bryce Young.
However, with Brown calling the plays, it has yielded similar results.
Young's worst game of his career came under Brown. The offense has struggled extensively to move the ball downfield. Aside from a razor-thin victory over the Houston Texans, there hasn't been much to write home about regarding incremental improvements.
So, Reich, who appears anxious about his job, is wanting to take back control. But ultimately, it doesn't matter who is pushing the buttons if all the buttons do the same thing.
Reich or Brown calling the plays doesn't change the reality of this team simply not being close to where it should have been coming into the season.
