In a few instances throughout the Carolina Panthers Week 2, 20-17, loss to the New Orleans Saints, veteran quarterback Andy Dalton checked in the game in short-yardage situations.
When Dalton checked in the first time, a false start on right guard Cade Mays forced the Panthers to shift from a 4th-and-1 try to a 54-yard field goal. The second time Dalton was in the game resulted in a first down when the veteran quarterback flipped the ball to running back Miles Sanders for a 5-yard gain.
The reason for the decision: Give the Saints a different look and have Dalton involved, like Taysom Hill.
“Bryce can do any of it,” Reich said Tuesday when asked. “But you got an experienced veteran. There’s no golden rule that says he can’t come in and play a couple of plays in the game. Look what the Saints did. I know Taysom Hill’s a different story, but why not do that to a lesser extent if it can be utilized in a positive way?”
He added: “That could be part of the plan. It’s always a week-to-week plan. Every opponent is a different opponent. So, that’ll be a weekly decision. Andy’s a very experienced guy. So, if we’re bringing him in there to do whatever we’re bringing him in there to do, we feel like he’ll do a good job of it.”
Also, an interesting personal decision made Monday night was the use of Laviska Shenault, who played wide receiver and running back.
We as coaches have to do a better job of finding a way to get him a few more touches,” Reich said. “You saw the one run yesterday. He made a great individual effort on the run. There was stuff up for him, I can assure you that.”
On top of personnel decisions, the Panthers haven't taken shots down the field. After the game, Young shouldered most of the blame, saying he had to execute at a higher rate.
Part of getting more out of the offense means utilizing the vast array of personnel on the Panthers roster — meaning Reich will continue to have tough decisions to make.
