The Carolina Panthers have an offensive line problem.
And naturally, Panthers head coach Frank Reich will be forced to make a tough decision soon regarding the right guard position. Austin Corbett is still recovering from an ACL injury. He may miss the first few weeks of the season. The Panthers have rotated a bevy of names at the position, but Reich admitted that he hasn't fully decided who the starter will be coming into the season. But that is a decision he plans to make following the Panthers' second preseason game.
"No, it's still up in the air," Reich said of the right guard position. "It's a competitive battle. [We] Probably want to get through this game and probably lean towards a decision after this game, so we go into that last game with how that starting five is going to be."
Against the New York Jets, the Panthers' offensive line looked dreadful. Things got so bad the unit had a private meeting after the game to ensure something like that doesn't happen again.
With a rookie quarterback as talented as Bryce Young, a lot is resting on the shoulders of the Panthers' linemen. It is a season where many are expecting improvement. But if the offensive line doesn't step up, wins in the wide-open NFC South will be difficult to come by.
Corbett offered insight Tuesday when he indicated that everything in his rehab is going well, but it is still a wait-and-see process.
The Panthers could sure use his help. And Reich would benefit from having a veteran like him holding the guard position sturdy in a season full of change.
Nonetheless, big decisions loom for the Panthers. And arguably, the most important will be what Reich decides to do with an offensive line heading into a regular season chalked full of expectations.
