When the Carolina Panthers made tough decisions en route to cutting the roster to 53 players, some shocking names were shown the door.
The most shocking was nose tackle Raequan Williams, who started preseason games and looked like a guarantee on the initial 53-man roster.
It was believed that Williams would be a lock for the roster because, in the middle of the preseason, the Panthers waived Marquan McCall.
McCall was then almost picked up by the New England Patriots before failing a physical and being returned to waivers. Either way, Williams was assumed to take up the role McCall played.
While Williams' status could have changed by a flip of a coin heading into Tuesday's deadline, it was still a surprising cut. And looking at the Panthers' current options on the defensive front, it would be a huge shock if the team didn't find a way to add reinforcements upfront before Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Panthers will play on Sept. 10, with or without defensive line help.
