Bryce Young came into the preseason with a weight of expectation.

Part of that came from Young being the Carolina Panthers' No. 1 overall draft pick. Another aspect of the expectations placed on Young comes from the talent he has put on display throughout practice in recent weeks. On Tuesday, Panthers' offensive coordinator Thomas Brown praised the aspect of Young that is difficult to quantify with on-field numbers — his maturity.

"We've talked about the evaluation process with him from day one," Brown said. "The expectation level for him, even before coming here, has been a dynamic to work with every single day."

What has stood out to Brown has been Young's propensity to make highlight plays.

"Every day, there are two to three highlight plays," Brown said. "Whether it be pocket movement, throwing off balance. Whether it be disguising what we are doing from a  pass protection standpoint, to how he handles the overall pressure. It's just rare for a guy his age."

Young has taken each NFL lesson in stride. he hasn't allowed the weight of expectations to define who he is as an everyday player. Instead, he has used his influence to command huddles and become a voice veterans and young players alike can rally behind.

To Brown, that displays a level of maturity that is rare.

"He's still a young dude, for sure," Brown said. "But he acts like he's 45 years old."

A prime example came when the Panthers fell apart against the New York Jets. Young could have looked to blame his offensive line, which struggled to the point of holding a private meeting following the game, but he didn't. Instead, he took the loss in stride and admitted to areas he can improve on as the team's franchise signal caller.

And it is that maturity that makes Young the celebrated leader those in the Panthers franchise have claimed him to be.

"It's that maturity that makes him so much fun to be around," Brown said.

For the Panthers and Young, it is a good place to start.
