Things were different in the second preseason game the Carolina Panthers played in.

The team put up 19 points, and at different times, the offense looked free-flowing and open, giving the NFL a glimpse of what could be coming during the regular season.

Though the Panthers lost to the New York Giants 21-19, the offense put up 235 yards, granting some confidence to those questioning if this team will be any good in the regular season. The offense, though it can still improve, showed how quickly they can put up points.

“I thought it was better,” head coach Frank Reich said when asked about the offense. “We did a little bit more. We still didn’t do a ton, but we did some more. We did some more stuff. We had a few plays and had an opportunity for a few more.

“I thought Thomas did a great job of calling the second half. Happy with his development there. He’s a really sharp guy now. He’s super sharp. Thought he did a great job in the second half when he had an opportunity.”

The offense didn't look as generic as it did in Saturday's loss to the New York Jets. Indicating that from week to week, the Panthers are adding more to what the offensive unit can do on the field.

Still, the offensive line was in question. For moments, it looked okay. But for long stretches, the offensive line play was unreliable and rather unsubstantial.

However, to Reich, Friday was a step forward. The team is far from its final rendition, but for now, the steps forward are encouraging to the coaching staff and the organization.

“That didn’t feel like that to me,” he said. “Did we do everything that we do? No. There’s a lot more that we can do. We did a couple things in this game that we didn’t do the first game.”
