The Carolina Panthers woke up Monday morning to some great news ahead of the team’s primetime matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, giving them the opportunity to prove how serious they are on a national stage.

Following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night, the Panthers are half a game behind in the NFC South race and could overtake the Buccaneers for the top spot in the division with a win over the 49ers later tonight.

It’d be a great position to be in entering Week 13, with some more tough matchups coming down the pipe, including two critical games still left against the Buccaneers. It’s shaping up to be a tight finish.

Current NFC South standings entering Monday Night Football

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5)
  2. Carolina Panthers (6-5)
  3. Atlanta Falcons (4-7)
  4. New Orleans Saints (2-9)

Despite the Falcons’ win, they are still 4-7 and without quarterback Michael Penix Jr. the rest of the way. This has really turned into a two-horse race between the Buccaneers and Panthers to see who can come away with the division crown in 2025 and host a playoff game.

Yet, the Panthers cannot afford to get too far ahead of themselves. Tonight’s matchup against the 49ers will be a tough opponent, regardless of how banged up San Francisco has been this season. The 49ers are still a 7-4 team capable of putting up serious points on offense.

Carolina enters this game a little banged up, being without starting center Cade Mays and two starting linebackers in Trevin Wallace and Christian Rozeboom, opening the opportunity for other players to step up in their place.

“These are great opportunities for these men,” Panthers head coach Dave Canales explained. “They work so hard to have these moments to get into games to help their teammates to advance their careers, and so when they happen, we count on them, and we approach every game that way at every position.”

The main player to watch tonight will be former Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey. If Carolina wants any chance of winning this game and taking over the NFC South lead, they’ll need to find a way to limit the former franchise legend, who’s been borderline unstoppable, with a depleted linebacker core. If not, it could be a long night for the Panthers.
