The Carolina Panthers added depth at wide receiver Tuesday morning, hours before the roster cut deadline, in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the trade, the Panthers received wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette in exchange for a swap of conditional 2025 seventh-rounders. The trade was first reported by Ian Rapaport. And the Panthers now have an additional option in the return game.

The 6-foot-1 Smith-Marsette was second in the league in receiving yards this preseason, with nine receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns in three games.

During the preseason, he averaged 21.67 yards per reception, with a pair of 40-plus yarders, while playing with Chiefs backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

The trade comes as the Panthers are dealing with injuries to their wide receiver group. Some of those names that have battled injuries include DJ Chark Jr., Terrace Marshall Jr., and Laviska Shenault Jr.

And in 16 career games with the Vikings and Bears, Smith-Marsette has six catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns. The Panthers still have to bring the roster of 80 players down to 53 by the deadline Tuesday afternoon. So, this trade was just the first of many more roster moves to come.
