Dan Morgan finally landed his playmaking wide receiver. And it was a move littered with risk.
The Carolina Panthers traded Donte Jackson and pick No. 178 in the 2024 NFL Draft for wide receiver Diontae Johnson and pick No. 240 on Tuesday.
Heading into the offseason, Morgan discussed the need to surround Bryce Young with steady wide receivers who could get open quickly. Johnson is that, albeit with some baggage.
Johnson is known as a deva in NFL circles. Joseph Parson of The Athletic reported that scouts said he is a talented "pain in the a–."
Though a diva, Johnson did have a positive message for Panthers fans following news breaking of the trade.
"Let's get it!" He wrote on X, the website formally known as Twitter.
He also replied to a post stating that he is ready to make plays in Carolina by saying "Know dat!"
Johnson is 5-foot-10, 183 pounds. His game is predicated on speed and creating separation.
His last great season came in 2021 when he recorded 107 catches for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns – all career highs.
With Young, the Panthers will play Johnson on the outside while keeping veteran Adam Thielen in the slot.
Johnson was the Panthers' move to secure a playmaker after bowing out of the Tee Higgins sweepstakes. It is a high-risk proposition, trading a primary defensive contributor during the 2023 campaign, but sometimes the risk is worth the reward.
