Panthers S Tre’von Moehrig explains his side of the story leading up to the postgame altercation with 49ers WR Jauan Jennings
A wild situation both players will likely face discipline for.
If you stayed till the end of the Carolina Panthers vs. San Francisco 49ers matchup on “Monday Night Football” last night, you probably saw the postgame altercation between Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig and 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
If you watched closely the entire game, you could see this situation brewing on the field as frustrations were shared by both teams throughout the entire game.
But what happened and what started all this mess? Well, it’s becoming a little bit of he-said, she-said so let’s break down what we know so far.
Tre’von Moehrig and Jauan Jennings explain both sides of postgame altercation
“It just manifested (during the game).” Moehrig said in the locker room after the game. “He wanted to do some stuff after the plays, talking crazy. That’s all there is to it.”
Frustrations reached a breaking point when Moehrig threw a low blow punch to Jennings after a play, and mind you a play neither player was even involved it.
“The guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the b—-,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan explained. “I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there.”
After the game ended and the two sides came together at midfield, Moehrig and Jennings approached each other and Jennings threw a shot back at the Panthers safety and had to be pulled away by his teammates until things calmed down.
“Man, TV (is) going to tell you what happened, man,” Jennings said after the game. “I was just responding to me some childish behavior. That’s all it was.”
Regardless, both players should be at fault. You can argue Jennings deserved to get something back on Moehrig for the way he hit him during the game but you also gotta be a better person in those situations, something that goes for both players.
“I’ll get to the bottom of that,” Panthers head coach Dave Canales said. “I want to see what exactly happened, and I haven’t had a chance to talk to Tre about that yet, as you know, we’ve just been kind of talking to the team and wrapping up the day, but that’ll be a conversation that I’ll dig into.”
The NFL will likely hand down some kind of punishment in the form of a fine later in the week after reviewing all of the footage from the game. I’d expect both players to get hit with a fine of some sort.
