And on Saturday, for the Panthers, that appeared to happen. A video circulated the internet involving a hiccup between wideout C.J. Saunders, offensive linemen Larnel Coleman, and J.D. DiRenzo, who got into a shoving match with linebackers Jordan Thomas and Brandon Smith. Take a look at the video:
Following practice, Panthers head coach Frank Reich spoke about the incident in question, where he explained that the fight was a bunch of nothing.
“I’m not really lookin’ for any of that,” he said. “I’m not tryin’ to manufacture the emotion. It happens sometimes. And for us out there, right, it’s like, ‘ho-hum.’ It’s gonna happen at some point. But really, the energy and enthusiasm and the grit and the fight really has to come within.
“So, I think our guys have been doing that. When you have those moments there, you just move on and you stay focused.”
And staying focused has been the root of the Panthers' needs.
The 2023 season is one with which expectations are a must to live up to. There is a new quarterback in the room, Bryce Young, who has earned the respect of nearly everyone in the locker room.
Additionally, the NFC South is a division that is wide open. Realistically, nearly any team can win the division. At the heart of the Panthers living up to that mantra is the offensive finding consistency, the defensive playing fast, and everyone getting along.
So, it is good that Reich is airing on the side of remaining cool. Training camp fights aren't out of the ordinary. But to be out of the ordinary, that means taking unordinary routes. And it seems that is where Reich wants to take the Panthers.
