The Carolina Panthers should be sellers at the 2023 NFL trade deadline.
Yet, some still believe the team at 0-6 will give up draft capital to add a wide receiver who has been average-at-best during his time in Denver — Jerry Jeudy.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has the Panthers sending away a 2024 third-round pick and a 2024 fifth-round pick to land Jeudy, who is yet to tally a 1,000-yard receiving season.
It is a move that would be head-scratching. Adam Thielen has played well. At 0-6, the Panthers won't be making a push for the playoffs. And already, the team has given up hoards of draft capital to land its rookie quarterback Bryce Young in the 2023 NFL Draft. Why would it give up more picks for a player who has struggled to catch on at the NFL level?
Here is Benjamin's explanation.
"A year after Kadarius Toney was dealt for a three and a six, Jeudy could be the next mercurial first-rounder to relocate. While he represents Denver's only legit long-term WR prospect at 24, he's failed to hit his stride through three-and-a-half seasons. The Panthers desperately need younger help around QB Bryce Young. Imagine the irony if Jeudy joins Steve Smith's old squad."
Look, Jeudy would be a nice player to have. But it comes down to the price. The Panthers are rebuilding, whether Frank Reich and his coaching staff want to admit it or not, and losing out on future draft capital for a wide receiver who hasn't necessarily impressed is a move that makes no sense.
In the NFL, teams tend to fall in love with potential. Jeudy has always been a player who looked better on paper than on the field. The Panthers sacrificing draft capital to bring him in wouldn't make the team better in the immediate future or the long run.
