For the Carolina Panthers, nothing rings truer.
Sitting at 0-6, the Panthers are looking to recoup some assets lost in the trade with the Chicago Bears that netted Carolina the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. That means, the team could be selling off some key playmakers and fast.
NFL writer Kevin Patra recently sorted out this season's buyers and sellers. Here is what he had to say about the rather bleak future ahead of the Panthers.
"Change is already on its way in Carolina, with coach Frank Reich handing over play-calling duties to OC Thomas Brown. More could be coming for the winless Panthers heading toward the trade deadline. Without a first-round pick and currently holding just six total selections in 2024, Carolina should look to replenish now. Brian Burns, who is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason, would be the biggest trade chip. While moving the pass rusher would be a significant dent to the Panthers’ D, it could be their best way to recoup a high pick. Frankie Luvu and Jeremy Chinn also have expiring deals, although Chinn’s reported injury likely kills his trade value. Terrace Marshall Jr., a 2021 second-round pick, has not been productive despite the Panthers’ limited receiver corps, catching just 16 passes entering Week 7."
It is the names many expected: Brian Burns, Terrace Marshall Jr., and Jeremy Chinn.
Burns is on the trade block because the Panthers couldn't figure out a way to agree on a long-term extension. Marshall has often struggled for a role in Frank Reich's offense. And Chinn has played far less than in seasons prior — around 50% of defensive snaps.
If the Panthers look to offload at the trade deadline, expect deals to revolve around those three. They still appear to be the most vulnerable.
