Thomas Brown, the current Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator, clearly learned a few things from Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay.
And McVay was clearly impressed with Brown, who was the Rams' assistant head coach and tight ends coach before being hired by Carolina. On Monday, after McVay caught word that Brown was the new offensive play-caller for the Panthers, the Super Bowl-winning coach had nothing but good things to say about Brown's competitive makeup.
"He's ahead of the curve," McVay said to reporters Monday. "He'll be ready for it. He's called plays before and I'm very confident that he'll do a really nice job.”
When Panthers head coach Frank Reich handed over play-calling duties, he said it was part of the plan.
He said it would have happened regardless of the Panthers' record. And he doubled down on his belief in Brown as the lead play-caller.
"When I hired Thomas, I knew it was gonna probably happen fast," Reich said. "But I needed to get in-season. I needed to get in-season and see it all play out. I’d like to think this is the best decision no matter what our record is.”
To the change, Bryce Young said he was excited for what is to come. He praised Brown as a coach and explained his involvement in the rookie's daily life.
And for Brown, he is simply ready for the challenge.
“I think over time, we’ll have subtle changes here and there," Brown said. "But, again, I’ve been a part of this offense from the get-go. So he’s [Reich] kinda giving me full reign to do what I want to, but it’s always gonna be a collaborative effort.”
It is a change the Panthers needed to make, and one McVay, a Super Bowl-winning coach, champions for a reason.
