The Chicago Bears were the most active team in the NFL on the first day of free agency.

The Bears signed two star linebackers in Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards to strengthen the middle of the defense. General manager Ryan Poles also inked RG Nate Davis who is an instant upgrade on the offensive line. Not to mention the signing of DeMarcus Walker who stands to improve Chicago’s pass rush woes from a year ago.

All of those moves come after the blockbuster trade the Bears made with the Panthers to move out of the No. 1 overall pick in exchange for two first-round picks, two second-round picks and WR D.J. Moore.

The Bears struggled to find success in Poles’ first season as general manager, but he helped the team make necessary sacrifices in the short term to hopefully build a contender in the long run.

Chase Claypool, who the Bears traded for in the middle of the 2022 season, tweeted that Poles deserves a key to the city for all of the work he has done in such a short period of time.

Interestingly enough, acquiring Claypool might be Poles’ biggest blemish. The Bears dealt a second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for the wide receiver, who struggled to produce in Chicago.

The Bears likely have a few more moves left in them as Day Two of free agency begins. While the team’s moves look great on paper, Poles will ultimately be judged on wins and losses once the 2023 season gets underway.
