The Chicago Bears landed one of the premier offensive line prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft in Tennessee OT Darnell Wright. While he certainly fills a Bears need in the trenches, Chicago also made for the perfect destination for Wright.
Wright addressed reporters in his introductory Zoom conference and was still in disbelief in the way things played out on Thursday night.
“I’m in shock right now,” Wright said. “I’m literally in shock.”
Once he settled in, Wright spoke on what makes Chicago such a perfect fit for him. He credits his Senior Bowl experience in which he became familiarized with Bears OC Luke Getsy, but it was offensive line coach Chris Morgan who was a major draw for the Tennessee product.
“It’s rare that you get to go somewhere where you really get to get coached by someone you really like and you feel like can take your game to the next level,” Wright stated. “That’s what I feel like C-Mo can do for me. He already told me it’s gonna be hard, but I’ve never shied away from hard. I just want to get the best out of myself, and I think Coach C-Mo is gonna be perfect for me. It’s just gonna be perfect.”
Wright cites an intense pre-draft workout with Morgan as a pivotal moment in his draft process. He explained how Morgan wore him out on one particular visit.
"They brought me in, and (C-Mo) also came and worked me out. He kicked my ass, if we’re being honest," Wright said on Thursday. “He wanted to see what I was made of. It was hard, but I didn’t quit. So I think he respected that.”
Clearly the attraction was mutual as Wright now stands to start for the Bears in Week 1 of the 2023 regular season. Early indications point toward Wright sliding in at right tackle, but he does bring versatility if the team ever intends to move him around.
