The Chicago Bears upgraded what can only be described as an anemic pass rush last season by signing DE DeMarcus Walker.
Walker, who has six seasons of NFL experience, broke out with the Tennessee Titans in 2022. He logged six starts in 17 games played with career highs in tackles (32), TFLs (10), sacks (7.0) and QB hits (16).
In a recent interview on ESPN 1000’s Chicago Bears Weekly, Walker said there were three factors that led him to sign with Chicago.
“One, the attention they were showing me from when the season was over with," Walker said. "My agent was telling me how Chicago was very aggressive. There were a lot of teams that were heavy on me. [The Bears] were more consistent.”
Walker also credited the Bears’ belief in him was a major determining factor.
“All you need just one team, all you need is just one person that really believes in you, like a marriage.”
Walker also credits the Bears defensive culture, which is something that can get lost in today’s quarterback-driven league.
His final reason: Justin Fields.
Walker says he is willing to take on a leadership role with all of the young talent in the Bears locker room. He is exactly what Chicago needs on the field and in the locker room.
One of the last things Walker said in the interview that he was tired of losing. Having played with the Denver Broncos (2017-2020), the Houston Texans (2021) and the Titans last season, Walker is yet to experience winning at its highest form. Hopefully that is something that can change sooner rather than later in Chicago.
