Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles isn’t tip-toeing around in his commitment to quarterback Justin Fields.
Poles, who just hand-picked his second draft class with the Bears, brought in Fields during Chicago’s pre-draft process. The two watched potential prospects together during film sessions and surely picked each other’s brains during the strenuous evaluation period.
For a quarterback entering just his second season as the full-time starter, Fields clearly has earned the trust of Poles. Fields has demonstrated on and off the field that his level of maturity far exceeds his age at 24 years old.
Most general managers probably wouldn’t want to overwhelm the face of their franchise by putting them in this position. But this appears to be more of a demonstration of just how much Poles trusts Fields and goes to show that he believes Fields will be the Bears’ quarterback for years to come.
“I want my quarterback part of the process,” Poles told NFL Network’s Cynthia Frelund. “I told them what we were going to do. That relationship is important.”
Chicago has a history of using the starting quarterback to help make impactful decisions within the organization. This tactic dates back to when former Bears GM Phil Emery allowed Jay Cutler to essentially sign off on the decision to hire Marc Trestman as Lovie Smith’s replacement.
It’s difficult to imagine that this draft class can reach the extreme level of disappointment the Trestman era brought to Chicago.
All jokes aside, Poles is putting in plenty of effort to foster a championship level relationship with Fields. Not only did he assemble a revamped offense featuring competent weapons and a new-look offensive line, but involving Fields in the pre-draft process will go a long way in what Bears fans hope to be a long-lasting and fruitful union between the two parties.
