Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields has to be smiling from ear to ear after how the team performed in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Bears first pick in the fourth round took place No. 115 overall where the team selected Texas RB Roschon Johnson. After losing David Montgomery to the Lions in free agency, Chicago found a bruising back in Johnson who adds value in a multitude of ways.
Johnson stands at 6’2” 220lbs. with three-down potential in the Bears backfield. Capable of handling a heavy workload, Johnson backed up Bijan Robinson at Texas, but was widely respected as a leader in the Longhorns’ locker room.
In four seasons at Texas, Johnson compiled 2,190 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns on 392 carries. While jockeying with D’Onta Foreman and Khalil Herbert for carries, Johnson should have an immediate role in special teams, but his pass-blocking abilities could help him land a significant role early in the season.
The Bears used their second fourth-round pick (No. 133) on Cincinnati WR Tyler Scott. Many draft experts were shocked to see Scott slip all the way to Chicago in the fourth round, but GM Ryan Poles once again managed to find mid-round value.
Scott has elite speed and clocked a 4.44 40-yard dash at the combine. He plays even faster than that and will serve as a legitimate burner on the outside capable of taking the top of off defenses. Though the Bears have significantly upgraded the wide receiver room, Scott will almost certainly have a role in the passing game by Week 1.
It's important to note that Scott's production at Cincinnati actually increased in 2022 after Desmond Ridder was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. Scott compiled 54 receptions for 899 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Fields has to be pleased with the Bears’ draft strategy up to this point. The team solidified the offensive line by adding OT Darnell Wright at No. 10 overall and have since filled out their needs at skill positions. Poles is setting up Fields for a career year in 2023 with a handful of draft picks still at his disposal.
