Everyone needs somebody in their lives who believes in them the way Chicago Bears general manger Ryan Poles believes in Justin Fields.
Fields is entering just his second season as the Bears’ full-time starter, but a combination of ability and maturity has won Poles over in a major way. Even at 24 years old, Poles has made a point to consistently express confidence in the face of the franchise at every turn.
Poles joined NFL Network+ on Monday to rave about Fields’ development.
“I do believe in Justin Fields,” Poles told NFL Network’s Cynthia Frelund. “I do believe he can take the next step to get this organization to a championship caliber team.”
While Poles has certainly done his part to elevate the Bears this offseason by adding new talent on both sides of the ball, it’s up to Fields to string together some wins under center.
Poles wouldn’t have made it an offseason priority to go out and trade for WR D.J. Moore, sign TE Robert Tonyan and RG Nate Davis in free agency, or even draft OT Darnell Wright with a first-round pick if he didn’t believe Fields could lead this offense to the promised land.
If that’s not enough to demonstrate his belief in Fields, Poles also allowed the Bears gunslinger be a part of the team’s pre-draft process. Fields would spend time watching film of potential draftees alongside Poles in the weeks leading up to the draft.
Poles’ commitment to helping Fields become the best version of himself is extraordinary. There aren’t many general managers in the NFL who would let a quarterback offer input in the team’s draft plans, much less a quarterback entering his third season in the league.
Fields showed flashes of becoming a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback last season. With improved weapons and protection, Fields will be in charge of transforming the Bears offense into one that is capable of contending for a playoff spot.
Of course, that’s just the first step in what Poles hopes will lead to a Super Bowl with his guy under center.
