The most notable highlight of the Chicago Bears’ offseason featured GM Ryan Poles’ decision to trade the No. 1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a massive haul. While the Bears are already set up to make some noise in the draft, Poles might have another move up his sleeve.
E.J. Snyder of Windy City Gridiron reports that the Bears have had conversations with the Pittsburgh Steelers regarding a potential trade centered around Chicago’s No. 9 overall pick.
"Bears and Steelers are possible. They've talked about it. I know they've talked about it," Snyder said. "It's by no means for sure. … The most likely connect the dots moment is that Pittsburgh needs and a tackle and they go up for one because there's one they like and they'll be gone by the time they pick at 17."
Pittsburgh currently possesses the No. 17 overall pick, but they also hold two second-round selections. One of which is the No. 32 overall pick, which the Bears traded in exchange for WR Chase Claypool during the 2022 season. The other pick is at No. 49 overall.
The Bears have multiple needs across a handful of positions, so acquiring more draft capital is a good strategy for Poles to employ. That being said, moving back to No. 17 overall could cost the Bears an opportunity to select one of the premier offensive tackles in this draft class.
On the other hand, there is plenty of second-round talent at positions such as cornerback, wide receiver, safety and tight end, which are all positions the Bears could stand to upgrade.
Chicago won’t be able to fix every problem on the roster in just one draft, but gibing Poles a surplus of draft ammunition sure does increase the odds of an expedited rebuild.
