The Chicago Bears are making a concerted effort to build a better defense against the run for the 2023 season. The latest example of this comes in the form of Chicago’s third-round pick DT Zacch Pickens out of the University of South Carolina.

The Bears nabbed Pickens with the No. 64 overall pick on Friday night. Pickens is a 6’5” 305-pounder who wreaked havoc on opposing offensive lines in the SEC.

In 2022, Pickens registered 42 total tackles, four TFLs, 2.5 sacks, three passes defensed and one fumble recovery. He is exactly the type of player Chicago needs in order to improve upon a putrid run defense in 2022 that finished the year ranked 31st in the NFL.

The Bears fortified the middle of the defense in free agency by adding LB Tremaine Edmunds and DT Andrew Billings. Not only did Chicago add Pickens to the mix, but they also added DT Gervon Dexter just 11 spots earlier at No. 53 overall.

It’s safe to say that the Bears defense will look much different in 2023. Head coach Matt Eberflus has assembled a talented young group capable of raising some eyebrows in the NFC North.
